Women Leading on the Range: A Journey Rooted in Perseverance and Loyalty

By Meggie Flanigan, PGA of America Associate Professional

“Get comfortable being uncomfortable” has been a guiding principle throughout my early and rapidly advancing golf journey. It all began during my freshman year of high school when my parents encouraged me to try out for the girls’ golf team. Initially hesitant because I had played various sports but never dug deeply into golf, I eventually decided to give it a “shot.” Fast forward four years, and I was elected team captain, leading our squad to the first Suburban League Championship in school history.

This success led me to pursue college golf on a scholarship at Marion Military Institute, in Marion, Alabama, where I became part of the first women’s golf team in the school’s history. During my time there, I served as not only the team captain for two years, culminating in our first tournament victory, but also as a tutor to my fellow cadets and a Second Lieutenant.

Many people inquire about my experience at a military school with no prior military background, and I can confidently say it was one of the best decisions I have made. I learned that discipline breeds freedom and that I am capable of creating an extraordinary life for myself and others I surround myself with. I also embraced the values of finishing what I’ve started and remaining a loyal friend and leader.

Following graduation from Marion Military Institute, a two-year junior college, I received an academic scholarship to attend The University of Alabama. During that summer, while seeking a part-time job, I had a wonderful opportunity as a cart barn attendant at Westfield Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio. Little did I know that this role would mark the beginning of my career in the golf industry, which I believe is the best industry out there with immeasurable opportunities.

After engaging myself in the golf industry for a season, I was determined to continue progressing. While still in school, I applied to North River Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to keep that passion alive. Eventually, I landed a position as a golf intern back home during the summer. One remark from my boss at that time stuck with me: “The golf industry needs good people, and I believe you are a great fit.” Despite initially feeling underqualified compared to others in the industry, the support from my boss, co-workers, friends and family made it all worthwhile.

Over the following years, I forged valuable connections with fellow golf professionals who recognized my enduring passion for the game. One such professional presented me with an opportunity at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, an unbelievable experience considering they had recently hosted the PGA Championship. I applied and had the privilege of working there for a season. Additionally, through these connections, I gained experience at Shadow Wood Country Club in Bonita Springs, Florida. Fast forward to today, and I proudly hold the position of the First Assistant Golf Professional at Brookside Country Club in Canton, Ohio, recently recognized as a Top 100 Course in the United States.

I have always had a passion for helping others, and as I’ve advanced in my career, I have realized that this is exactly what I get to do every single day. Whether it is giving a lesson, organizing a tournament or simply lending an ear to listen, I find fulfillment in these interactions. Golf, to me, is more than just a game; it’s a vehicle that fosters meaningful relationships, both on the course and in life. Not only does it bring people together, but it opens doors to travel opportunities around the world.

To anyone reading this with dreams to pursue, I have two pieces of advice: “Get comfortable being uncomfortable” and “Surround yourself with good people, and great things will happen.” My golf journey’s success is owed to numerous individuals. If we’ve crossed paths along my journey, as a co-worker, a member, a guest, a coach, a teammate, a teacher, a friend or most importantly, my family or the Big Man Upstairs, then you deserve all the credit. Without each one of these people, I would not be where I am today – THANK YOU!
