USGA and R&A to Announce Anchoring Decision

The United States Golf Association (USGA) and the R&A will announce their decision on proposed Rule 14-1b Tuesday, May 21 at 8:00 a.m. EST during a jointly-held press conference. The proposed Rule would prohibit anchoring any club when making a golf stroke.

The two ruling bodies proposed the Rule on November 28, 2012 and had allowed for a 90-day comment period , which ended February 28. The two organizations promised a decision in the spring. If the USGA and R&A adopt Rule 14-1B, the ban on anchored stokes would not take effect until January 1, 2016.

During the 90-day comment period, many organizations, including The PGA of America and the PGA Tour, expressed their opposition to the proposed Rule, while the European Tour and many local golf associations claimed to be in favor of the anchoring ban.

The press conference will include USGA President Glen Nager, USGA Executive Director Mike Davis, and USGA Rules of Golf Committee Chairman Mark Newell.
