We implemented a new Golf Range Association of America (GRAA) award category this year – Top 50 Clubfitters! Among our first class of award winners are PGA of America Teaching Professionals, custom clubfitting specialists and even some facility owners.
Our first GRAA Top 50 Clubfitter Award Winner Profile piece is on Brad Mundy. Mundy, a PGA Associate in the Professional Golf Management Program, is the owner of Tour Truck Golf in Hickory, North Carolina. His facility offers lessons, custom fittings, club building, extensive club repair and indoor golf simulators. He co-founded the business in 2021 but assumed sole ownership in 2024.
“I grew up in Taylorsville, North Carolina, and took a carts/outside operations job at Brushy Mountain Golf Club when I was 14 years old,” Mundy explains. “That’s when I started playing golf, as well. Joey Ferguson, the PGA of America Director of Golf, got me my first set of golf clubs.”
Mundy started playing every day — 18 holes after work, sometimes 36! He’d play and practice whenever the opportunity arose. He’d get dropped off at the course in the morning, set up the golf carts for the day, hit the course, turn the carts around, pick the range and conclude his day with a few more swings.
Mundy played golf for his high school team and then at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, as a Business Administration-Sports Management double major. He knew he wanted to be a golf professional even back then and entered the PGA PGM Program in 2000. After venturing into careers outside of golf, Mundy got back into it around the time of COVID, re-entered the program and started Tour Truck Golf with a few partners.
At Tour Truck Golf, Doug Gillispie is Mundy’s lead fitter and a golf coach who recently entered the PGA of America’s PGM Program. Mundy and Gillispie split the coaching and instruction.
“Fitting, club building and sales are our bread and butter,” says Mundy. “We have two Foresight Sports QuadMAX launch monitors in our indoor hitting bay.”
Mundy specializes in custom fitting and custom builds, and has been successful fitting for and selling Srixon/Cleveland, Mizuno, Callaway, Cobra, PING, Titleist and TaylorMade golf clubs. They have been Elite Fitters with Srixon/Cleveland for several years running, which is taking him to Las Vegas next month for a top clubfitters conference. Mundy always enjoyed the custom club building aspect of the business, even doing so in his home before opening Tour Truck Golf.
Tour Truck Golf’s student roster runs the gamut from beginner to elite players, including a young golfer who Mundy says is near the top of his AJGA competitive class. Between the fitting expertise and the coaching acumen, Mundy and his small team of professionals at Tour Truck Golf are combining education, technology and passion to improve the golf experience for golfers in their area.
With this breadth of knowledge, Mundy knows when to teach and when to fit. His honest business approach means he’s doing what’s best for his golfers. If they’re in for a fitting and a new set of clubs, but their swing needs some help, Mundy will encourage a few lessons first and revisit the clubfitting process at a more appropriate time. This level of service cannot be understated and very often leads to long-term dedicated customers and increased business down the line.
Mundy offers a Players Club membership that enables golfers to rent his indoor simulator space when he or Gillispie are not using it for lessons or fittings. This not only brings in added revenue, but also potential students and fitting/club repair clients.
Looking ahead, Mundy sees lighter shafts being more prevalent than ever, leading to faster swing speeds and longer drives. In fact, Mundy says the shaft is the lifeblood of the golf club and must be matched adequately to the golfer for positive and effective results.
