Andrew Skeens on the importance of understanding the data behind golf shots:
At Pin High Golf Center, we recently installed five indoor bays equipped with Trackman IO Launch Monitors to accompany our outdoor range. Given our microclimate here in Mequon, WI, the addition of our indoor bays allows us to serve our golfing community year-round. The simulators also do a great job of making this technology and its in-depth data more accessible for the average golfer. However, I’ve found that you can’t just show someone these new data points for the first time and expect them to understand them. When individuals see a big screen displaying metrics like swing speed, launch angle or spin rate, it can be overwhelming unless we take the time to explain it to them. Teaching with launch monitors effectively means going beyond the data. I make sure to explain the underlying concepts of what the numbers mean, how to use them, why we track them and what we’re trying to change with them to bring forth optimal results. I want my students to understand what’s happening in their swing and be able to problem solve as best as they can when I’m not standing next to them. Empowering them with that understanding makes them more confident and more self-sufficient in their practice.
Andrew Skeens on the business impact of understanding the data behind golf shots:
When golfers understand the technology and the data accompanying it, they not only want to use it more often, but they will use it more effectively as well. It’s no longer just a fancy screen giving off numbers; it becomes a valuable feedback tool that enables them to improve their golf games. By educating my students on what the data means and how it connects to their performance, they start practicing with more intent. This leads to more meaningful improvement, higher satisfaction and more repeat visits. It also helps build a stronger relationship between instructor and golfer, as they see the investment in their development. In the long run, it’s a win for my student’s golf game and our driving range as we continue to grow.
